This week, our employers were asked to fill out a performance review for us. Some things I did well at, like be punctual and trustworthy, and others I did not, like having a positive and professional attitude. She also put that I'm always on time and I communicate well with the customers, which is a big deal. You cannot be mean to customers at all. I know I have an attitude problem but that's not towards the customers. Not that it makes it any better because I know how big my attitude is and that I should work on it. It's how I've been my whole life so it is kind of hard to change. Other than that, she said I have been doing pretty well.
This week I got to do something new. We have these special bags of dog food called "Redford". Redford dog food is only sold at Pet Supplies Plus so it really is our food. Some people are put on Redford to sell it. I found out that I was put on Redford but first I had to do all this paperwork to learn about it and what makes it so great. After I did all of that, I had to try and get people to switch their food and buy Redford. After ten minutes, I sold two bags of Redford to two different people and let me tell you, I felt so accomplished. At six o' clock that night, my manager told me to go do aisles so I only had about 15 minutes left at that point. Within those fifteen minutes, I sold another three bags of Redford which is really hard to do because honestly no one wants to switch their dog food. Then I went to aisles, which I love doing because I honestly still struggle with where things are. It was a great experience to do and next week I get to be on Redford twice! Also this week, I had an evaluation with my manager and she told me things I am good at and things I can do better for the company and for life overall actually. Let me tell you right now, I know of a million and ten things I can do better. I'm going to be honest with you, I had a really bad attitude problem-not towards the customers of course. When I get stressed out though or I don't feel good, it gets bad. My manager honestly told me I need to work on my attitude and it will make life and working so much easier. She also told me not to stress because MOST (but not all) customers will understand so that everything is done right. I have been told not to stress a lot but it really helps to hear it from my manager for me to just take my time. This is Shelby. She is the assistant manager at the store I work at. Let me tell you, she may deny it, but she is one of the biggest sweethearts you will ever meet. I never have a dull day working with her. Shelby is the absolute greatest.
This week at work was pretty fun. First of all, I've held about 9 puppies in just the few days I worked this week and it was beyond great (until I got home and I was interrogated by my own dogs)! I usually close the store the days I work since I have school during the day, so the other day I was closing, and I found a dead gecko... It was sad but I promise you it gets better. My manager, Shelby, had to get him and put him in the animal freezer, which is where we put our dead animals (to be honest I don't know why. They said it was the humane way to do it). Well I wanted to see the animals in the freezer and Shelby picked up one of the older dead geckos and drops him. This gecko hit his frozen head on the edge of the freezer and bounced back in. I looked at Shelby and she was crying from laughing but repeatedly said, "I FEEL SO BAD!" It was great. Then my coworker, Jon, comes in and makes a joke about the gecko and I looked at both of them and go, "Wow, Jon, that joke really knocked him dead". The look I got from those two was just astonishing. They were so disappointed in that joke but they couldn't help but laugh. My week was pretty entertaining. I watched the "Ted Talk" video about being a leader. Drew Dudely talks about having a "Lollipop Moment". This video really made me laugh but it also helped me realize something. It helped me realize that if someone has been a impact in your life, tell them! There is nothing better than hearing someone say you made their life better. I try to be a leader in the best way I possibly can. I have only worked at Pet Supplies Plus a little over a month and I am already training new employees. It feels good that I can already train somebody to do their job. I found out yesterday that someone sent in a survey about me saying how nice I was and how I was doing a great job and it just felt good. I had a smile on my face for the rest of the day and I'm smiling now just thinking about it. This is Harley. I met him at work and he was so excited! He just had to jump on the counter and give me a kiss!
At work this week, I started doing a little more than just being a cashier. I was a stocker for a day and let me tell you, it wasn't the greatest. Everything in the aisle had to be "perfect" but no matter what, it wasn't "perfect enough" so I think I'm just going to stick to petting the dogs. On the plus side, a little 8 week old pitbull puppy came in and he didn't have a leash or collar and the owner apologized but little did he know that I was letting the puppy roam around anyway. The puppy ended coming up right next to me and I picked him up and let him cashier with me. He was the cutest and I miss his little face. I read the article with the life quotes and I will always go with Rafiki's quote, "Oh yes, the past can hurt. But, you can either run from it or learn from it". That has been my favorite quote since I could talk. He is so right. It's just like moving on from something that is holding you back. You always have room to improve or fix. It's okay if something happened in your past, but that is not what defines you. Their is always room for change. You can do whatever you want. It's all on you. This is right on the wall next to me. We'll see how long it lasts up there.
Boy oh boy do I hope your week was better than mine at work. It was really fun at first. I was able to take care of the animals at the end of the night. They really just need to be sprayed and make sure there is water. I was trying to spray the snake but they were underneath the log and they told me to lift the log to see them and I was out. Nope. I don't think so, man. A couple days later, I went into work and just threw up. Yeah, that was great.... Can't wait to go in today...
Now for this article that I read. It was about eulogy virtues and resume virtues. Personally, I'd rather be defined for my eulogy virtues. Resume virtues are just the skills I have as a worker.. and that isn't even really determined by me. I can say I'm good at something but my employer could say different. We build ourselves up to be better people. That is all I'm trying to do, for my resume and eulogy virtues. I am getting a lot better at my new job. I can answer more questions that customers ask, I can fix problems, I can clean and feed the animals; it's great. Things got a little hectic on New Year's eve but I handled it well. Seeing the dogs that people bring in really make my mood better. Doing returns aren't all that great but I just have to get used to it. Sometimes the sale prices are wrong so I had to fix that a couple times. All I ever see is animals, a lot of animal products, and customers. I mean it is not all that fancy looking. I wish I could hang my own pictures on a cashier desk but there are many cashiers and you are not assigned to a register. I mean, it looks like any animal supplies place you would ever imagine to see. I also wish we had a lot more animals. Sometimes we get cats here and there but there's no bunnies or guinea pigs. I wish we had those. I really like our lizards though. They're pretty cool dudes. This is what I see if I'm at register 3 (featuring a random customer).
Yesterday, December 15, was my first day at Pet Supplies Plus. It was such a blast there. I first had to learn how to use the register and I got that down within an hour. I was being trained by my very nice coworker, Clare. She has been there for only three months and she is like a professional there. I saw so many dogs and I just wanted to take every single one home. I got to help customers find items they needed for their animal and talk with them about their pets. I am just so excited to have a job with animals. I looked at the video that Audri made to trap a monster. That video was really cute and I look at to that kid for his perseverance. What I learned from the video is that even though you tried so hard at something, it may not work for the first few times but you have to keep trying. At work, I messed up quite a few times but I did not give up. It is something I have to learn. The register didn't seem like much but it is something I have to get used to. Have to get the job done somehow! This is Clare training me on the register.
